Freeman Residence

February 2023 - March 2024

This project is a contemporary extension to a classic inner Melbourne Victorian townhouse, guided by our clients’ brief to maximise natural light and showcase the warmth of timber.

On a tight inner-city site, the design brings daylight deep into the plan and strengthens the connection to the courtyard, so the new living spaces feel generous despite the compact footprint. Openings are carefully placed to balance light, privacy and everyday comfort.

Timber is used extensively in flooring, joinery and detailing, creating a calm, tactile interior that feels both modern and enduring. Externally, timber also forms a finely crafted overlooking screen, resolving privacy constraints while softening the built form and adding warmth to the streetscape.

Natural materials and thoughtful detailing were prioritised over showy finishes, resulting in a home that feels inviting and lived-in from day one. While this isn’t presented as a high-performance case study, we did take the opportunity to remove gas services and deliver an all-electric home, setting the project up for a lower-carbon future as the grid continues to decarbonise.

Nobu Constructions worked closely with the architect and clients to deliver a finely crafted, light-filled addition that respects the home’s heritage. It’s a project we’re proud of, and we maintain a great ongoing relationship with the owners.
