Little House is a compact addition to a Bassendean home, designed to create a functional and welcoming space while maintaining a strong connection to the surrounding garden.
The new structure features charred timber Shou-Sugi-Ban vertical cladding and a simple pitched roof, creating a contemporary contrast against the existing brick home. Large windows and glazed doors bring natural light into the interior and connect the living spaces with the established garden.
The design is oriented predominantly to the north and east, capturing passive solar gain and garden views while minimising south-facing windows. A concrete slab provides thermal mass, and careful window placement supports cross ventilation. A ventilated wall and roof cavity, with counter battens, ridge vent and base cladding vent, keeps the wall and roof assembly dry and durable. Ceiling and wall insulation, low-carbon concrete, and low-VOC paints and finishes round out the home's environmental performance, reflected in a 7.1-star energy rating.
Inside, warm timber cabinetry, neutral finishes and carefully considered details create a calm and comfortable atmosphere. The compact kitchen maximises storage and functionality, while the open-plan living and dining area makes the most of the available space.
A 2kW solar PV system and reverse-cycle air conditioning support day-to-day comfort and efficiency, while up/down honeycomb blinds and aluminium shading hoods to the north-facing windows help manage heat gain through the seasons. A greywater recycling system, raingarden and WELS 4-star tapware further reduce the home's water footprint.
