Cloud Street

March 2018 - November 2020

Cloud Street is a large family home in an inner suburban street, designed to accommodate an extensive brief while retaining a modest presence. Although two storeys, it sits quietly within its neighbourhood and reflects an approach in which a building gains strength from contributing to its setting rather than standing apart from it.

That intention shaped the project from the beginning. Planning, form, materials and detailing were all used to break down the scale of the house and help it settle into the street. The front fence was removed, and together with landscape designer Lisa Armstrong, an open garden with native planting and informal sitting areas was developed to create a more direct relationship between house, garden and neighbourhood.

The plan is organised into four clear zones: parents, children, communal living and utilities. At its centre is a north-facing courtyard garden, with dining at the heart of the ground floor and quieter living spaces arranged to either side. Parking, workshop and services are placed to the south.

While the house appears informal in the way it is experienced, it is carefully resolved in the way it is built. The form is broken into smaller parts and held together by two sleeping pavilions, allowing a large program to be managed through a series of more legible elements. A restrained material palette supports this clarity. A rammed earth spine provides structure, thermal mass and acoustic separation, while verandahs, operable shading, carefully placed windows and thickened walls help moderate light, air movement and temperature.

For us, projects like this depend on close collaboration between client, architect, builder and landscape designer. The environmental performance and character of the house come not from any single gesture, but from many coordinated decisions carried through carefully during design and construction.
