We're Officially a Certified Social Enterprise — and Here's Why That Matters

The SBA is now a certified social enterprise, officially recognised by Social Traders for driving net zero homes across Australia's building industry.

The Sustainable Building Association has reached a significant milestone: we have received Social Traders Certification, formally recognising us as a social enterprise. It's independent, third-party confirmation of who we are, how we operate, and why we exist.

What Social Traders Certification Means

Social Traders is Australia's leading certifier of social enterprises, and their certification process is rigorous. To qualify, an organisation must demonstrate a genuine social purpose, meaningful trading activity, and a clear commitment to putting public benefit above private gain.

We're proud to have met all three criteria.

Our certification formally recognises that our primary social purpose, to make net zero sustainable homes the standard by building industry capability through education, guidance, and cross-sector collaboration, is the real and driving force behind everything we do. It confirms that the SBA derives a substantial portion of its income from trade, operating as a genuine business rather than relying solely on grants or donations. And it acknowledges that we reinvest an amount equivalent to 50% or more of any annual profits back into achieving that social purpose, meaning that when the SBA succeeds financially, the industry and the community are the primary beneficiaries.

A Win Years in the Making

This certification didn't happen overnight. It is the result of years of consistent, purposeful work, and we want to take a moment to acknowledge the people who made it possible.

Our Directors have given an extraordinary amount of their time, energy, and expertise, voluntarily, to build the SBA into what it is today. They have shown up not for personal gain, but because they believe in the mission: a built environment that doesn't cost the earth. This certification validates that belief and the structure they have worked so hard to build around it.

To our Directors: thank you. What you have contributed is immeasurable, and this recognition belongs to you as much as anyone.

What This Means for Our Community

For our members, sponsors, and collaborators, this certification is your assurance that the organisation you support is the real deal. When you invest in the SBA, whether through membership, sponsorship, or simply showing up, you are contributing to a verified social enterprise with a clear purpose and transparent values.

It also opens new doors. Social enterprise certification is increasingly recognised by government bodies, procurement processes, and funding bodies as a mark of credibility and trustworthiness. As the sustainable building sector continues to grow in importance, particularly as Australia works toward its climate commitments, the SBA is well positioned to be a trusted, recognised leader at the table.

The Bigger Picture

The building industry is responsible for a significant share of Australia's carbon emissions. Changing that requires more than good intentions. It requires an industry that is genuinely equipped to build differently. That is what the SBA exists to do: educate builders and construction professionals, connect the sector, and make sustainable practice the norm rather than the exception.

Social Traders Certification tells the world that we are doing this work with integrity.

We're proud of what this milestone represents, and we look forward to growing this movement together.
